The architects of Springdale

Several York architects worked in the neighborhood; no single hand designed it, and that is the point.

A stone Tudor Revival house with leaded-glass bay windows, a carved arched entrance, and a balustraded terrace
863 South George Street, designed by the Dempwolf firm and completed in 1918 for Robert Emerton; later the Hahn Home. Its style, a blend of late Gothic and Tudor, is often called Jacobethan.

Springdale contains an unusually rich concentration of individually designed and architect-influenced early-twentieth-century houses. The National Register nomination associates the neighborhood with the Dempwolf practice, York’s most prominent architectural firm, founded by J. A. Dempwolf in 1874, and with architects including Robert Stair, Edward Leber, Harry E. Yessler, Russell Yessler, and the firm of Gemmill & Billmeyer. Documented Dempwolf work in the district includes the Tudor Revival Hahn Home at 863 South George Street and Colonial Revival houses at 101 and 142 East Springettsbury Avenue and 915 South Duke Street.

Individual house stories, with their architects where documented, will be added as research is verified.
