Colonial Revival

Symmetry, brick, a classical entrance with fanlight or sidelights, shutters, multi-pane sash: the neighborhood's most common language, and rarely the same twice.

A red brick Colonial Revival house with a columned side porch and bay windows under broken pediments
141 East Springettsbury Avenue, built in 1927 to blueprints sealed by Gemmill and Billmeyer.

Look for a centered front door under a pediment or a small portico; paired windows balanced left and right; brick laid in Flemish bond on the better facades; a fanlight or sidelights; shutters sized to actually close. Roofs are side-gabled or hipped, often slate. The style reached for the eighteenth century but was built with 1920s plumbing, and the proportions are a little more generous than the originals.

Come and see it.

The best way to know Springdale is to walk it: fifteen stops, about a mile and a quarter.
